Florence has its first ever “Martin Luther” garden square

Rome (NEV), April 30, 2017 – On April 30 in Florence the opening ceremony of the new “Martin Luther” garden square took place in Lungarno Torregiani, on the river of the Renaissance city and just opposite from the Lutheran Church. The City Council last February 17th accepted the invitation of the Florentine Protestant Churches eager to leave a sign of their secular presence on the occasion of the 500th anniversary of the Reformation.

The new plate on the former Torregiani garden was uncovered by the town Councillor Andrea Vannucci, together with the director of the Office for dialogue and ecumenism of the Italian Bishops Conference (CEI) Don Cristiano Bettega and the Waldensian Pastor Letizia Tommassone.

The ecumenical initiative included games for children in the afternoon, gastronomical specialties and an evening concert, organized by the Lutheran church.
