Rome (NEV), September 21, 2018 – “As a Federation of Protestant Churches in Italy (FCEI) we cannot but approve and support the clear words of the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees”. That is what Paolo Naso, coordinator of Mediterranean Hope (MH) – FCEI refugees and migrants program, declared on occasion of the meeting, held in Rome on September 14, in which UN Commissioner Filippo Grandi met the Asylum Table*. In the afternoon of the same day, at the Foreign Press Hall of Rome, Grandi spoke of legal access routes for asylum seekers, of the humanitarian duty at sea and of the need to guarantee to asylum seekers also subsidiary forms of protection. He also carried out a lesson in juridical civilization, which “we make our own – continued Naso – and which we sincerely hope the Italian Government will acknowledge. The Law by decree announced in recent days by Minister Salvini goes, in fact, in the opposite direction of the one suggested by Grandi. It would be very serious that Italy might be closer to Orban than to the United Nations”, concluded Naso.
* In addition to the Federation of Protestant Churches in Italy (FCEI), the following organizations belong to the Asylum Table: A Buon Diritto, ACLI, ActionAid, Amnesty International Italy, ARCI, ASGI, Casa dei Diritti Sociali, Caritas Italiana, Centro Astalli, CIR, Comunità di S .Egidio, CNCA, Emergency, Médecins du Monde Mission Italy, MEDU, Save The Children Italy, Senza Confine, Oxfam Italia.
