Rome (NEV), January 27, 2019 – On Sunday 27th January, from 15.30 onwards, took place the interreligious march “Passi di pace” (Steps of Peace), organized by Protestants, Catholics, Orthodox and Muslims together. The march started from the church of the Ss. Annunziata in Via Bassagrande and ended in Largo Marinai d’Italia, on the promenade next to the port of Carrara: the port as a symbolic place for the meeting of peoples. Open to all citizens, the initiative received the adhesions from both religious and lay bodies. Songs, prayers, reflections and, in closing, contributions by the present authorities were planned.
There was also a symbolic action created with coloured shapes in the form of footprints, which were attached on a carpet of paper: “every step of peace had a message written by each person, an intention of peace on which to engage”, explained the organizers .
The Methodist pastor of Carrara and La Spezia, Massimo Marottoli, underlined the welcoming nature of the Mediterranean Sea: “We intended to gather the challenge of history that has seen us divided by great lacerations and conflicts. We acknowledge the mistakes of the past and are ready to combine peace with reality. Closing ports means denying the vocation to hospitality. We marched also to witness this belief”.
